Alloys of copper and aluminum are known as aluminum bronze, together with other alloying additions produce a range of properties that are beneficial to a diverse range of industries. Of these, the nickel aluminum bronze group may be the most widely used. They have been adapted with time to optimize performance and provide a combination of properties that can offer an economic alternative to other types of alloy systems.
One such nickel aluminum bronze alloy is C63020 or AMS 4590. Alloy C63020 is used extensively in aircraft landing gear systems for various bushings and bearings. C63020 is a fairly complex material, and during manufacture require good control of the metal structure by attention to the composition and heat treatment.
The excellent bearing properties against steel, corrosion resistance in salt conditions during de-icing of runways in winter and high mechanical properties makes C63020 ideal for landing gear applications. C63020 is generally used for loads greater than alloy C63000 AMS 4640 can handle. This alloy has great load bearing capacity as well as great wear resistance.
C63020 AMS 4590 is a martensitic product that is strengthened by heat treatment. The iron content of C63020 is higher than C63000. This alloy is used in applications where higher strength is required but reduced elongation and ductility is applicable.
