How to Calculate Plug Size for Graphite Plugged Bronze Bearings

The addition of graphite plugs add multiple beneficial features to cast bronze bearings. The main benefits being self lubrication and the ability to maintain that lubrication at high temperature ranges.  The applications for graphite plugged bronze bearings are unlimited.

Often we receive questions regarding designing graphite plugged bronze bearings.  One common question is how to calculate the lubricant coverage and plug size.  The accepted standard solid lubricant coverage should average between 30 to 35% of the surface area.  This percentage can vary from application to application.  In an effort to assist in the design of graphite plugged bronze bushings, we have created a quick reference guide.  Click the image below to view the digital version of the guide.
